After the world has ended, Jon finds one more note from Jonah.
It's tucked away among the statements, folded on a little post-it note. It would be easy to crunch it in his fist and throw it away without ever seeing it, and he should: there is nothing Jonah could possibly say that he wants to hear anymore. But once Martin is out of sight, Jon fishes the note out of the box and unfolds it.
"By the time you find this, I assume the deed is done," he reads. "I want to tell you thank you. I will never say I'm sorry."
Jon falls silent, closing his eyes for a second. He grits his teeth together, so hard he can hear them gnash together.
"But you must know, Jon, that you are free now," he continues once he opens his eyes again, his voice shaking a little as he speaks. "You don't have to pretend you are anything you aren't. You will reign over this world, a king, a god, and I will be so proud of you."
He hates how much that still matters to him, even now.
"Be free, Jon," Jonah whispers to him through his own voice. There are no more words on the paper.
Fireplace has been lit; Jon tosses the note there, watches it catch flames. He watches it turn into ashes, his hands clenched into fists.
Be free. Be free, his arse. Jonah knows as well as he does that Jon has never belonged to him more.
