The wedding ring is the usual, simple golden band, slipping easily around Martin's finger. Yet, it feels so heavy.
"I pronounce you husband and husband," the priest says. "You may kiss."
The words are for Peter, who doesn't hesitate; he grasps Martin's jaw in his hand, and for a moment Peter just holds Martin, staring at him with a look in his eyes that Martin doesn't dare to describe. He has words for that look; he just doesn't want to say them out loud, or even think them. After some time, a slow smile stretches on Peter's lips, and he closes his eyes as he leans in to kiss Martin.
Peter's lips are cold and hard, but for now they rest lightly against Martin's own mouth, not demanding much. Martin knows that won't be the case later, when they are alone in their bedroom.
"I have waited for this," Peter says when their lips part. He reaches up with his hand, stroking Martin's cheek with a crooked finger. "I never thought I would want to share my life with someone else before, but you proved me wrong. You showed me how very lonely you can be when together with another person."
Smiling, Peter gives Martin a light peck on the tip of his nose. "What a valuable lesson that was to learn. I will be sure to thank you for it. My husband."
Martin shivers. He believes that.
